The June 2011 issue of the German Journal for Evidence and Quality in Healthcare presents new insights on the health care systems’ specific influences on patient participation and on the current state of implementation of Shared Decision Making in health care.

13 countries from Europe (France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK), America (Brazil, Canada, Chile, and USA), Asia (Israel) and Australia contributed to this comprehensive issue.

The main national developments from the 13 countries are briefly described with the following questions:
• What about policy regarding SDM?
• What about tools – decision support for patients?
• What about professional interest and implementation?
• What does the future look like?
